Expert Physical Therapy in Long Island's South Shore

Panetta Physical Therapy was founded in Bay Shore in 1988, when Christina Panetta opened a small clinic with a simple idea: every patient deserves one-on-one care from a licensed expert, not assembly-line treatment. Three decades later, our Bay Shore location at 131 West Main Street remains the heart of Panetta Physical Therapy — and one of the most trusted physical therapy clinics on the South Shore of Long Island. Whether you are dealing with stubborn back pain, recovering from joint replacement, or trying to stay active after a sports injury, our licensed physical therapists combine advanced training with one-on-one care to help you move better, feel stronger, and live without pain.

Why South Shore Patients Choose Panetta Bay Shore

Panetta Bay Shore isn't a high-volume clinic where you're handed off to an aide. Every patient works directly with a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, in private treatment rooms, on a personalized recovery plan — the same care model Christina Panetta opened the doors with in 1988.

  • One-on-one care from a licensed PT. Your full appointment is with your therapist — not divided across multiple patients.
  • Advanced diagnostic tools on-site. Musculoskeletal ultrasound, EMG/NCS testing, and Functional Capacity Evaluations let us see what is actually happening inside your body, so treatment is not guesswork.
  • 35+ years of Long Island expertise. Founded in 1988 by Christina Panetta, our team has earned the trust of physicians, surgeons, and thousands of patients across Suffolk and Nassau counties.

Conditions We Treat at Our Bay Shore Clinic

Our Bay Shore physical therapists treat the full range of orthopedic, neurological, and post-surgical conditions, including:

  • Back pain and sciatica — herniated discs, lumbar strain, SI joint dysfunction, post-op spine recovery
  • Knee pain — meniscus tears, ACL recovery, patellar tendinitis, knee replacement rehab
  • Shoulder pain — rotator cuff tears, impingement, frozen shoulder, post-surgical care
  • Hip pain — bursitis, labral tears, hip replacement rehab
  • Foot and ankle pain — plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, sprains, post-fracture rehab
  • Peripheral neuropathy — numbness, tingling, and burning pain in hands and feet
  • Balance and dizziness — fall prevention, vestibular rehabilitation
  • Sports injuries — runners, golfers, tennis players, weekend athletes
  • Post-surgical recovery — total joint replacements, arthroscopic procedures, spine surgery
  • Chronic pain management — long-standing pain that has not resolved with other approaches

If you are not sure whether physical therapy can help, we offer free 30-minute discovery sessions at our Bay Shore clinic. Book a free evaluation and let one of our doctors of physical therapy assess your situation — no obligation.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Many patients come to us after frustrating experiences elsewhere. Here is how a typical first visit at our Bay Shore clinic is different.

A Detailed One-on-One Evaluation

Your first appointment is 60 minutes with a licensed physical therapist. We review your medical history, listen to your story, and perform a hands-on evaluation to identify the structures causing your pain — not just the location of your symptoms.

A Clear, Written Recovery Plan

Before you leave, you will know exactly what is wrong, what your treatment will involve, and how long recovery is expected to take. No vague reassurances — clear, evidence-based answers.

Hands-On Treatment From Day One

Most patients begin treatment at the first visit. That includes manual therapy, targeted exercises, and education on what to do — and what not to do — to accelerate your recovery.

Specialized Diagnostics Available in Bay Shore

Most physical therapy clinics on Long Island rely on imaging from outside providers — sometimes weeks after your initial appointment. Our Bay Shore location offers three advanced diagnostic services on-site, so we can see what is happening inside your body during your evaluation.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSKUS)

Real-time imaging of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Unlike MRI, MSKUS is dynamic — we can see how tissues move during movement, which often reveals issues that static imaging misses.

Electromyography & Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS)

Used to diagnose conditions like carpal tunnel, radiculopathy, and peripheral neuropathy. EMG/NCS testing measures the electrical activity of your muscles and nerves to pinpoint where dysfunction is occurring.

Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

A comprehensive assessment of your physical abilities — strength, range of motion, endurance, and tolerance for specific work or sport activities. FCEs are commonly used for return-to-work clearances and disability evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy?

In New York State, you can begin physical therapy without a physician referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first. After that point, a referral is required to continue. We are happy to coordinate with your doctor at any stage — and if you do not have a primary care physician, we can recommend trusted physicians in the South Shore.

Does my insurance cover physical therapy at Panetta?

Panetta Physical Therapy participates with most major insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, United Healthcare, Medicare, and many local plans. We are also part of the Catholic Health Independent Practice Association (IPA). Call us at (631) 665-4560 with your insurance card handy and we will verify your coverage before your first visit.

How long does physical therapy take to work?

Most patients feel meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 visits, with full recovery typically taking 8 to 12 weeks for common orthopedic conditions. More complex cases — major post-surgical rehab, chronic conditions, or peripheral neuropathy — may take longer. We will give you a realistic timeline at your first visit so you know what to expect.

What should I wear to my first physical therapy appointment?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that gives us access to the area being treated. Athletic wear works great. If you are being seen for a knee or hip issue, athletic shorts are ideal. For shoulder evaluations, a tank top or tee that allows shoulder movement is perfect.

Do you offer same-day or next-day appointments?

Yes — we typically have same-week availability and often have next-day openings, especially for evaluations. Call (631) 665-4560 to check current availability.

Where do I park, and how do I find the entrance?

Our patient entrance is on Smith Avenue, not West Main Street. There is a free parking lot directly adjacent to the entrance, with accessibility-compliant spots near the door. Look for the Panetta Physical Therapy sign on the Smith Avenue side of the building.

Ready to Start Feeling Better?

Don't wait for your pain to become someone else's problem. The sooner you start with a skilled physical therapist, the faster you recover — and the less likely you are to need medications, injections, or surgery.
